Part 3a- Indvidual

Mrs. Marie Haggerty was a maid of 72 years and lived in Massachusetts. She represented the time period becuase she was a nurse maid or a second woman, and she helped people get better. She benifited to the time period because since The Great Depression was such an awful time no one had time to get sick because everyone was worrying about how to make more money and get food.

Mr. Garavelli was a stonecutter in his fifties and was living in Vermont. He represented the time period because in his job many men die from the silica, a dust in the stonesheds. In his interview he states that he never has got infected with the silica, but he also doesn't make as much money as the other men do.

Irving Fajans was a department store worker and lived in the Union Headquarters in New York City. I think that she represented the time period because she worked in Macy's department store and she had to try and sell the clothes to the people to make money. I think that it was tough for her becuase people didnt have alot of money, so when she came to sell things it was harder to sell it to the majority of the population. It was only the more wealthy people that she was selling clothes to. Also her and the other people that worked there used to play jokes on the boss and make harmless, humorus acts.

The man in the colonial park, claimed to be a scotch comedian, he lived in New York City, close to 150th street. He told the interviewer, Ralph Ellison, that 'They got all the money an I ain't got nothing, but they got to breathe the same air I do.' I found this interesting because he was relating the wealthier people to the poor people during The Great Depression, and that they might not be alike in personality or the way they dress but we all are living and have to live in the same world together. I think that he represents this time period because this man was trying to find the relation between himself and the wealthy people.

Mrs.Mayme Reese was born in Charleston, South Carolina and she was living in the St. Nicholas Terrace, New York City as a housewife. She had two married sons, one married daughter and one single son. I think that she could represent the The Great Depression time because her and her friends used to meet at least twice a year and make quilts and go to fairs and try to win with the best quilt to get money because thats what they needed to survive. By putting their ideas together in the quilt they were able to support their families.
